Barangay 143, the first ever Filipino anime series, finally premieres on Philippine television Oct. 21 on GMA Network. Topbilled in the series are Kapuso actors Julie Anne San Jose, Migo Adecer, Ruru Madrid and Kelley Day. Except for Ruru, they are doing an anime show for the first time.
Julie expressed excitement to be doing “voice acting” for the first time. “I feel so blessed to be in this project and to be able to show another side of my talent. In voice acting you have to show all kinds of emotions through your voice. Kailangan may exaggeration…”
Migo likewise said he’s excited about “Barangay 143” which is just one of his many projects right now with his home studio GMA Network. Among them is the well-followed and top-rating “Ika-5 Utos.” A product of Starstruck 2015, Migo who was raised in Australia, now delivers his lines straight in Tagalog. When he came over a few years ago, he could barely speak Tagalog. One of the busiest and most serious Kapuso actors today, Migo said “I’m married to my work and career.”
Ruru, on the other hand, was in the cast of the just concluded drama-comedy series “Inday Will Always Love You.” He is also in “Sunday Pinasaya” and now “Barangay 143.”
Kelley, a former Kapamilya who admitted she and Inigo Pascual dated for two years, said she’s still polishing her Tagalog but like Migo has improved a lot. She came over for a vacation which was supposedly for just a week (after which she was headed to the United Kingdom to go to college there) but the chance to be in Philippine showbiz was offered to her and so she stayed.
Also in the cast of “Barangay 143” are veteran actors John Arcilla, Edu Manzano, Lorna Tolentino and Cherie Gil with Alice Dixson, Teresa Loyzaga, Raver Eda, Pen Medina, Benjie Paras, Archie Alemania, Ping Medina, Jerald Napoles, Roadfil Macasero, Kimpoy Feliciano and the Kramer family: Cheska, Doug, Kendra and Scarlet.
“Barangay 143” is set in the streets of Tondo and tells about family, friendship, love, hardships and a topic most Filipinos love - basketball!
“It’s our labor of love and finally ‘Barangay 143’ is going to premiere on Philippine television,” said Jackeline Chua, managing director of Synergy888 Entertainment Media Inc. which is co-producing the anime series with August Media Holdings of Singapore, TV Asahi of Japan and ASI Animation Studio. “It’s been exciting to work with some of the best talents the world of animation has to offer and I am looking forward to our fruits of our hard work being on GMA.”
According to Jyotirmoy Saha, CEO of August Media Holdings: “Barangay 143 US everything that I’ve seen and experienced in the Philippines so far. It’s people who readily share their love, millions who go about life with a smile, and above all, basketball, the pulse of this country. I think people not only here but worldwide would love this show.”
“Barangay 143” tells the story of Bren Park (Migo), a young rising basketball star in Korea who turns his back to everything that is important to him after a major event changed his life forever. The search for answers leads Bren to Manila where he goes to live with his former nanny Tita Baby (Lorna) in the gritty neighborhood of Barangay 143.
It is here that Bren unexpectedly finds a whole new family who teaches him yo live and love once again. Coach B (John), the coach of Barangay 143’s Puzakal Basketball Team is quick to spot his talent and is determined to bring Bren back to basketball but Vicky (Julie), the team manager and the coach’s daughter, and Wax (Ruru), the star player of a rival basketball team are not quite in favor. Meanwhile, Bren’s strings from Korea are still attached to him and his once girlfriend Jinri (Kelley), hopes to rekindle their relationship once again.
