Ian Ignacio: The new action star

Ian Ignacio’s potential to be an international action star is showcased in the action flick The Trigonal: Fight for Justice, slated to be shown starting Sept, 26 in local cinemas. The Fil-American theater actor and Taekwondo expert has the character, the form, the physique and most specially the skills to be an action superstar which he is expected to turn out after The Trigonal: Fight for Justice.

The premiere of The Trigonal: Fight for Justice last Sept. 22 at the Cinema 4 of SM Cinema Megamall was sponsored by the PMA Class 1987 Hinirang Class of which the -writer-director Vincent Soberano was a member.

Visibly impressed by the movie, special guest PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde said “I never expected to see a Filipino movie that looked like this (‘The Trigonal’). Parang ‘Sicario’ (a Hollywood movie) at ‘Bloodsport’ combined…” Albayalde was a member of PMA Sinagtala Class of 1986.

If he was impressed by the movie as a whole (credit of course goes to the director!), certainly PNP Chief Albayalde was also in awe of Ian Ignacio’s remarkable performance as the lead character Jacob Casa, as well as the other actors in the cast, including Rhian Ramos, and especially Sarah Chang. (The character Jacob Casa is torn between his love and promise of fight retirement to his pregnant wife and his utter love for competition fighting.)

If the consensus of the viewers was that everyone in the cast of “The Trigonal” can fight, it was because Soberano intentionally assembled an array of Filipino and foreign martial arts champions pitted against each other in the fight scenes. Soberano himself was a former soldier, Muay Thai world champion, MMA coach of about a dozen UFC fighters, and a veteran of more than a dozen pro fights.

The thing about an action movie with great martial arts fight scenes is that the choreography will always keep you on te edge of your seat, guessing what’s next, an action buff shared. “The art of martial combat opens up a repertory of fighting styles, sequences and moves that are always unpredictable and unforgettable.”

Recalling, Director Soberano said: “Being on the set of ‘The Trigonal’ is like being at a martial arts convention. You’ve got guys practising Arnis on one side, another group working on Jiu-Jitsu chokeholds at another side, and a few full-contact sparring matches in the ring.”

Going back to Ian, he was born and raised in San Francisco, California, growing up in the martial arts community. In the late 90’s, Olympian and action star Monsour del Rosario, now a solon, mentored Ian in his Taekwondo training, honed through the years until he started winning gold medals especially in the Carlos Palanca Jr. (CPJ) TAEkwondo Open, and gave him the opportunity to be part of the Philippine Team.

However, Ian, who is the son of veteran character actor Levy Ignacio, decided to go back to the US to finish a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Service. When he came back, he appeared in stage plays in UP, among them “Ang Misis Kong Promdi,” adapted by stage director Tony Mabesa from William Wycherley’s “The Country Wife.”

Ian’s first movie in the Philippines was “Ang Bagong Dugo” shown in 2017 and for which he was dubbed a “revelation” by netizens.
